Attendance Update May 2017

Dear Parent/Carer

IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE UPDATE – NOTICE TO ALL SOUTH LINCOLNSHIRE ACADEMY TRUST PARENTS/CARERS

The South Lincolnshire Academies Trust is incredibly proud of its students and the fact that the majority attend school regularly and on time. We are legally bound to inform all parents/carers, irrespective of their child’s attendance, of the recent changes regarding attendance and the legal system. We would like to thank all of our parents/carers for their support with regard to attendance and would encourage anyone with any questions to contact their child’s Year Lead.

The changes/updates are:

  • Further to the recent High Court Case relating to leaves of absence in term time, Lincolnshire County Council has advised the Trust that it will once again be administering Penalty Notices. Please be aware that these Notices can be issued for either an unauthorised leave of absence or where the child is a persistent absentee (below the required 90% attendance). Regular attendance means in accordance with school policy and the trust requires students to be in school every day between the hours of 8.40am – 3.15pm. Term and holiday dates can be found on the school website and in the Attendance Policy.
  • Penalty Notices will be sent to any person over the age of 18 in the home, deemed to have day to day care of the student. This does not necessarily have to be a parent.
  • If unwell, parents/carers are expected to contact the school on each morning of the absence. This is not only to keep the school up to date with the child’s progress but also fulfils the school’s Safeguarding Policy requirements.
  • We would also like to remind you that no medical appointments are authorised without corresponding evidence (eg prescription labels, appointment cards/letters, forwarded text messages). These can be amended retrospectively. Please be aware that where the child’s attendance is a cause for concern, you may be asked to complete a Medical Consent Form giving the school permission to contact the family GP.
  • If a student is absent from school for 10 consecutive unauthorised days, the Trust is required to inform Lincolnshire County Council that they are missing education. Once this has been done, that parent/carer will be contacted by a member of the County’s Out of School Team.
  • Please be aware that the Trust’s main concern is the safety and wellbeing of all of its students. A child who is not in school is unable to be educated and is more likely to come to harm.

If you have any concerns regarding this update, please contact your child’s Year Lead.

Yours sincerely
