Design & Technology
Design Technology (GCSE)
Design and Technology is a subject that challenges students to identify and solve practical problems that arise in society. The courses are demanding but very rewarding and invite students to be disciplined, creative and imaginative in the pursuit of designing and manufacturing high quality products.
The courses are divided into two main elements:
- The major project requiring students to produce a comprehensive design folder that supports and enables the manufacture of a practical product (60%).
- The end of course exam(s) (40%).
Teaching is delivered through a combination of:
· Focused practical tasks
· Design and Make assignments
· Knowledge and understanding acquired from various sources
Students are required to choose one area from the list overleaf.
Design Technology Resistant materials (wood, metal, plastics)
An aptitude for practical work and presentation is an advantage on this course. Students are encouraged to design and make products by combining different materials using a variety of hand and machine tools. Previously produced products have been trophies, storage items and educational toys/games.
Design Technology Graphic Products
Students who have a flair for high quality presentational work would excel on this course. The type of products produced are models of architecture, interior design, mock ups of every day items, point of sale displays and stationery items.
Design Technology Systems and Control
This course is aimed at students who are more scientifically minded and have a good understanding of maths. Students have the option to study either
mechanisms or electronics. A typical mechanisms based product would be a model of a controlled motorised buggy. An electronic product might be a personal item such as a bicycle alarm that could be triggered by a sensor.
Design Technology Textiles
This course would appeal to budding fashion designers or students who enjoy working with compliant materials using modern equipment. Students design and make products that explore the use of natural and synthetic materials.
A typical design task might be to design and make a personal clothing item.
Typical design tasks are focused either upon fashion, designing and making garments or accessories or soft furnishings.
Design Technology Food
Food technology today is about creating new food products. In lessons students will have the opportunity to research, design and make these new ideas.
The theory side of the subject is of equal importance to the practical work and gives an opportunity to gain knowledge about the food industry in general.
Our aim in practical sessions is to develop your skills to make you a competent person in a hectic practical environment.
