Geography (GCSE) (SEG Syllabus A)
Geography is a popular subject at GCSE covering a wide range of topics and useful skills. The course will appeal to students who have an interest in environmental issues, current affairs, travel and finding out about new places. Students are given the opportunity to broaden their horizons and explore their own ideas and opinions.
Geographers will develop skills used in modern life ranging from data collection and map reading to debate, discussion and library research. Lessons aim to make extensive use of visual, auditory, kinaesthetic techniques such as mind mapping. Such a wide range of content and abilities makes Geographers very attractive to prospective employers and the subject combines well almost every other subject. A field trip in Year 10 will cover studies of a local farm and river.
Subject Content and Assessment Pattern
A. Written Paper 1 (40% of total assessment) will comprise the following topics:-
· Tectonic Activity (Volcanoes/Earthquakes)
· Rivers
· Coasts
· Ice
This paper is 1 hour 45 minutes long. It will also test map skills, photographs, satellite images etc., and their interpretation.
B. Written Paper 2 (35% of total assessment) will comprise the following topics:-
· Settlement
· Agriculture
· Resources/Tourism
This paper is 1 hour 30 minutes long. It will test knowledge of these three topics above.
Coursework
A fieldwork investigation worth 25% of total marks, comprising around 2000 - 2500 words in length.
This is based around a day excursion to Stamford in Year 11 during which the students will conduct a variety of urban studies.
C. The assessment papers will be available in two tiers:-
· Higher Tier (Grades A* - D)
· Foundation Tier (Grades C - G)
D. The Department will notify students after the Year 11 mock examinations as to which level they will be entered at for their final exams.
