German
In the Robert Manning College we offer German in KS3 and in KS4. Some students are invited to continue with their language in KS4.
The study of a modern foreign language is valuable in many ways not all of them obvious. As well as providing an opportunity for the development of linguistic skills, it increases awareness of differing lifestyles, provides insight into the way language works and develops, and teaches valuable study skills, such as predicting, selecting, information seeking, comparing and memorising.
Students continuing with a language to GCSE level at the moment follow the Edexel GCSE course, which allows them to complete coursework throughout the two years, while retaining the rigour of a final exam. We have in the department language assistants who work with small groups of students reinforcing the speaking skills which have been taught in the classroom.
Students will be encouraged to take part in the German exchange in KS3 and work experience abroad for KS5. Exchanges have been running successfully for many years and students who take part find that they are more confident when attempting to speak the language.
