A FULL TIME PROGRAMME
All students at the College are full time. Each student’s final programme of study is a combination of examination classes and private study periods. Private study, in College and at home, will be necessary to complete all courses satisfactorily. Students have time in the week without classes so that they may use the library, ICT facilities and other resources within the College. All Year 12 students are expected to have a minimum of three, 1 hour study periods each week.
Many students take a part-time job whilst in the sixth form. It is recommended that they work for no more than 8 – 12 hours a week. Research has shown that students who work more than 12 hours per week can underachieve.
SIXTH FORM LIFE
Students are encouraged to become fully involved in sixth form life. There are a number of extra curricular activities including:
Community Sports Leadership Award (CLSA): Aimed at providing an introduction into the coaching process for sports and activities and for teaching group.
The Millennium Volunteers: This allows students to be accredited for voluntary work both in and outside college.
Survival Cookery: This provides an opportunity to obtain the Certificate of Food Hygiene. The students develop practical skills in preparation for leaving home.
CoPE: This assists the development of wider Key Skills. It is recognised by many employers as well as universities. A pass in this will give the student 70 UCAS points.
The Year 13 Ball committee: This enables students to organise and plan their own end of college celebration.
PE/Games: This provides an opportunity to choose sports of interest. For example, going to the gym, swimming etc. It is th students choice to decide on the activity as a group.
First Aid: This allows the students to gain the St John's Ambulance Young Life Saver Certificate.
The Young Enterprise Scheme: This provides an excellent opportunity for students to set up and run their own businesses and is supported by industrial links.
Sixth Form Council: Opportunities to voice your opinion and organise activities for the Sixth Form as a whole.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
In our opinion students who do not achieve a reasonable standard struggle to succeed in the Sixth Form. Students require a minimum of 5 A*-C grades at GCSE across at least 4 subject areas.
Students are expected to study 4 AS levels/AVCE courses as well as AS General Studies in Year 12 and 3 subjects in Year 13 at A2 level (A level), and have the option to study A2 General Studies.
A limited number of resit GCSEs will be available, including Mathematics and English. Our resit policy is that students pay in advance for re-entry. This is refunded when the student achieves a higher result.
