College Council

As a member of the College Council you can make a difference!!

You can influence decisions which affect you and the life of the College, by representing the views of your tutor group at College Council meetings.

The advantages of being on the College Council are:

  • Students develop their citizenship skills by taking responsibility for expressing the views of others
  • They learn to work as a team and practise leadership skills
  • They lead the college in working to improve their immediate environment, working with external agencies and beginning to understand a range of important issues
  • Involvement in the College Council is an impressive factor to add to a progress file or CV

How do I become a College Council member?

There will be elections within your tutor group each September.  The procedure is simple:

  •  Students are nominated by one member of the tutor group and seconded by another.  Remember to nominate someone who will be mature and responsible enough to speak sensibly about important issues at meetings.
  • Nominees have the opportunity to present their case to the tutor group and explain why they should get the vote.
  • Voting takes place by secret ballot on voting slips provided.  The tutor counts the votes and declares a winner.  In the event of a tie the tutor group will vote again for the two remaining candidates.
  • The winner will be College Council Representative for one academic year.  The runner-up will be the Deputy Representative.

What will I do as a member of the College Council?

As well as representing the views of students at a whole college level, the college council will be involved in leading a project to improve the college environment.
